60 Years of Faculty Senate: Dissolved, New, and Reformed Committees

As we get ready to begin the work of the new Engagement Education Committee in October, we can reflect on the way that the committees administered through Faculty Senate change or reform over time to meet the needs of the institution. For example, the Academic Standards Committee morphed over time into the General Education and Instructional Effectiveness Committee (with some of the duties moved into the Admission and Retention Policies Committee). Committees like the Career Education Committee, Continuing Education Committee, Credits Committee, and Faculty Information Technology Committee were dissolved, again with some of the tasks from those committees incorporated into existing or new committees. The Appellate Committee was once five separate faculty appeal committees and now functions as a 30-person pool from which panels of faculty are formed to handle appeals as they are filed. The Committee on Committees is to thank for their efforts to structure faculty committees in ways that increase faculty engagement with shared governance.

What’s New

Committee Openings

Chair Bowler is requesting faculty volunteers to fill seats on the committees listed below. If it is a regular member seat, the term is included. For example, a 2028 Regular member seat means that the term for that seat will go from now until the end of the spring 2028 semester (or for select committees, through the summer and until the organizational meeting of that committee in Fall 2028). If it is an ex-officio seat, it only lasts this academic year. If you are interested in serving on any of these committees, please reach out to him via email and indicate your preference.
