Faculty Senate Apportionment Guidelines
Procedures used to establish the number of faculty in the various electoral units (academic code units) for the purpose of determining Faculty Senate apportionment.
According to the ECU Faculty Manual’s Faculty Constitution and By-Laws, electoral units are represented in the Faculty Senate in proportion to their share of the voting membership of the General Faculty, not to exceed fifteen percent of the elected Senators (ECU Faculty Manual, Faculty Constitution, Article III, Section 2). The voting membership of the General Faculty consists of all permanent employees of ECU holding appointment to a tenured or probationary-term rank or a fixed-term title, including faculty on leave without pay and either full-time or part-time faculty who satisfy the criteria above (ECU Faculty Manual, Faculty Constitution, Article II, Section 2).
Faculty members meeting these criteria will be counted as belonging to their department of rank (not home department) where these two differ. When a faculty member’s department of rank is part of a professional school, and the school is the recognized electoral unit, the faculty member will, for purposes of Faculty Senate representation, be counted as a member of the school which is his or her electoral unit.
Ratios used to determine Faculty Senate apportionment
The Faculty Senate shall not exceed 63 nor be fewer than 57 and the ratio of faculty members to elected faculty senators will be determined by the Faculty Officers (ECU Faculty Manual, Faculty Constitution, Article III, Section III). Below are the ratio options used to determine the apportionment in accordance with the number of faculty in the unit.
(i.e. 1-30 faculty within a unit in option A would constitute 1 faculty senator apportioned to the unit.)

No electoral unit will be allocated more than 15 percent of the elected Faculty Senate members (ECU Faculty Manual, Faculty Constitution, Article III, Section 2).
